Life in the Middle Ages

The Middle Ages--a time of hardship on the manor for most peasants, but also a time of luxury for lords and vassals.

You'll be posting a comment after each day of research. See my comment for how to post your responses.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DAY 1: Feudal Life: research the following links today: Feudal Life, Religion, Homes, and Clothing

In your post, include at least two surprising facts about each area. Then, write at least two questions you'd like to have answered about what you learned today. They should begin with words like How and Why, not Where and When--fat questions, not skinny questions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DAY 2: Feudal Life: research the following links today: Health, Arts & Entertainment, and Town Life.

Follow the same posting procedure for DAY 1.

  1. GREAT POSTS SO FAR!!
  2. A HELPFUL IDEA WOULD BE TO TYPE YOUR POST IN MICROSOFT WORD AND THEN PASTE IT HERE. THAT WILL CUT DOWN ON THE NUMBER OF SPELLING AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS!
  3. THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS YOUR QUESTIONS! ASK QUALITY QUESTIONS! YOU'LL BE ASKING THESE OF THE MEDIEVAL PEASANT YOU VISIT WITH ON THE FIELD TRIP.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DAY 3: National Geographic Castles: click on various parts of the castle to see your way around parts of a castle. Click on the mouse to continue to different parts of the castle.

In your post, include at least three things you thought were the most creative parts of the tour. Also, include why you thought they were creative. Finally, write at least two fat questions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DAYS 4 & 5: Castles in Britain: there are several parts to this website. For each day, choose 3 sections that interest you. Read those sections and create a post about it, stating at least one fact about each section you found intriguing (interesting, got your interest). Then, write at least one fast question for each section.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DAY 6: Battle! Try to work your way through to the medieval battle. Spend about 20 minutes trying before writing your post. Try this one for fun when you're done.

In your post, compare your attack to that of today's weaponry. What things are similar? How are they different? Include at least two questions about medieval weaponry and/or attack.

The Medieval Trebuchet can be tried at home--it won't work at school

Day 1

This is the federal life.

In the middle age the people would move to a small communitie for protection.

Another is that the people would also choose there leader or master.

The religion back then was very wierd because there was only one church to go in Europ.

It was cathiolic church and that church had it's law and rules.

the peoples home was mostly cold and dark, dampy.

The homes that had windows were very small and it would be opend on speial days.

The midivil people would wear woolen clothings and also with some cool undergarments made of linen.

How to tell if somebody is wealthy is by there clothing that kind of sounds like us today.

My first question is how prople served through some sickness.

My other question is what did they have to do if somebody did not believe in the smae religion in Erop.

The churches would use the insterment like bells and organs that was intersting.

The middle ages town life was nothing like ours today. There peace was growing. The peasents were moving farms and villiges into the countryside.

Also another interesting faact is that the only merchendice was the paddlers. They moved place to place selling them. Thats like when we have a fair on the streets and people sell those thats probibly how we got the idea.

Another thing i found interesting is for the 6000 or so guests, the following was readied: 300 quarters of wheat, 300 tuns of ale, 100 tuns of wine, 1 pipe of hipprocras, 104 oxen, 6 wild bulls, 1000 sheep, 304 calves, 304 "porkes", 400 swans, 2000 geese, 1000 capons, 2000 pigs, 104 peacocks, over 13,500 other birds, 500 stags, bucks and roes, 1500 venison pies, 608 pikes and breams, 12 porpoises and seals, 13,000 dishes of jelly, cold baked tarts, custards, and spices, sugared delicacies and wafers!

But my question is why eat so much food?

Day 4&5

The foods in the midievil ages were very exotic. The reasons that they ate was wired because they ate it as and entertainment.Another interesting thing thing is the Dudley's feasts in 1575. That was intersting becausr they ate 10 oxens each day.

The tools used back then are the tools we still use today. Some of those tools are from the Romans but different materials. One of those tools are the Auger that drills holes into wood. Another is nippers that cuts through wire pretty cool.

Why did the middievil people use the same tools as the Romans but different materials?

How did the middievil people eat so many food for entertainment?

Day 4&5

One interesting thing I found out about bathing and washing was that in medieval times no one took baths.

Another interesting thing I found out about bathing and washing was often times some privacy was provided by a canopy or tent.

One interesting thing I found out about medieval women was in reality medieval women had a lot of responsibility and were not at all inferior to man in terms of daily effort.

Another interesting thing I found out about medieval women was unmarried woman holding lands were powerful and had the same rights as men.

Why did the medieval unmarried medieval women get the same rights as men?

How did the medieval people not take baths, because wouldn’t they have smelled?

Day 4

One thing I found interesting is when the weather was nice out people would put their wood tubs in the garden and take a bath there.

Something else I found interesting was how the knights in a castle would look for a fight.

The last thing I found interesting was that the walls of a castle would be from eight to twenty feet thick.

Who invented drawbridges and why?

For the unwealthy people, did they have to share a wooden bath with someone or did they get their own?

Why were castles built differently?

This section was intersting and gave a lot of detail. I can't wait to read tomorrow.

One thing about kitchens is in early castle development, the kitchens were placed in a corner of the bailey.

Another fact is they were made of wood and had a reed-thatched roof. A covered walkway (called a pentice) led to the dining area. This is how prepared food was taken to the lord and his guests.

One fact about windows is openings for light in the castle tended to be either loops or windows. The loops did not provide an overall good view, and windows offered little protection for defenders.

Another fact is In the basement and first floor areas there were no windows and very few loops. The loops were provided with no closure, except maybe a thick curtain. The second and third floors would have had windows fitted with seats. The larger windows would be closed with wooden shutters or with parchment.

One fact about tower houses is tower houses are most common to Scotland, although there are some in Northern England. In 1535 an Act of Parliament declared that land owners that had land worth over £100 were to build a tower or castle. This would enable the land owner to defend his propertyses.

Another fact is tower houses are similar to a rectangular keep. The entrance was moved to the lowest level, and the walls of the tower house were less fortified. In the 17th century comfort became a priority and tower houses became more spacious.

In medeival times the weaponns were not the best. They had swords, ballistas(which look like cannons), and slings. These weapoons compared to todays weapoons are use less. They are similar cause they are both weapoons. They are differant because the weapoons today are more powerful then they were back in medeival times.

Why did they have only swords, ballistas, and slings?

How did they make their weapoons?

In medeival times ther weaponns are not vary good. They used swords and cannons and today we have guns and bombs witch are much easyer to use. They are similar in the way of protection but how you use them are a lot diffrent.

Why did they use sworeds.

How did they attack.

One thing I found interesting was that the spiral stairs were designed to ascend clockwise, to make the attackers expose more of their body in order to use their swords in their right hands.

Another thing I found interesting was that the basement of a castle also could serve as a prison.

Why did the polygonal towers disappear?

How did the Romans make their concrete?

day 2 part 2

One thing I found intersting was that singing without instrumental accompaniment was an essential part of church services.

Another thing I thought was pretty cool is that the dramas were performed with costumes and musical instruments. At first they took place directly outside the church. Then they were staged in marketplaces, where they were produced by local guilds.

Why were two people required to play the organistrum?

What did the organistrum look like?

What sounds did the organistrum
make?

One thing I found intesting was the new merchant class included artisans, masons, armorers, bakers, shoemakers, ropemakers, dyers, and other skilled workers.

Another thing I thought was pretty cool is of all the craftsmen, the masons were the highest paid and most respected.

How did the mechanical clocks look?

Why are the craftsmen responsible for building the cathedrals, hospitals, universities, castles, and guildhalls?

Health
People believed, for example, that disease was spread by bad odors.

The body was viewed as a part of the universe.

What kind of bad odors?

Ex. Four humors, or body fluids, were directly related to the four elements: fire=yellow bile or choler; water=phlegm; earth=black bile; air=blood.
How did they come up with this?

The arts
Medieval drama grew out of the liturgy.

These dramas were performed with costumes and musical instruments and at first took place directly outside the church.

Did they ever cost money?
If they did how much?
Was it expensive to them?

Ex. Two people were required to play this stringed instrument--one to turn the crank and the other to play the keys.

Why did they create it this way?

Town life
The English, Belgians, Germans, and Dutch took their coal, timber, wood, iron, copper, and lead to the south and came back with luxury items such as wine and olive oil.

The marketplace became the focus of many towns.

Why did they have to live at lodges for up to seven years?

What where they taught in school?

Day5

One thing I found interesting was Candles Makers were named Chandlers.

Another thing I thought was pretty cool is that a manor only had two social classes.

One thing I found interesting was drawbridges used pulleys just as we do today.

One thing I found interesting was that most castles used rope instead of chains to lower their drawbridges, but then changed to the chains further on in time.

One thing I found interesting was that the gatehouse was the weakest point of the castles.

One thing I found interesting was that most gatehouses had three floors: first floor was the guard rooms, the second floor was the weapons storage room.

Why did most castles use ropes instead of chains for the drawbridges?

How did they divide themselves into the two social classes?

One thing I found interesting is that drawbridges the earliest ones were removable.

One question I have is how did they manage to lift the drawbridges with their hands?

Another thing I found interesting is nearly all villages had a motte and bailey castle to guard them.

One question I have is how did they build motte castles in about eight days?

Another thing I found interesting is baths were normally taken in wooden tubs.

One question I have is wether or not people were afraid of getting splinters while taking a bath?

Another thing that was interesting was their personal higeine. And that their bathtubs were made of wood.It is also cool that they could take baths in the garden and by a fireplace with a canopy or a tent for privacy.

Why did the people make almst everything out of wood?

How did they feed big parties like at banquets and parties and how many people had to cook at one time?

A question I have about drawbridges is how did men pull the rope or iron, wouldn't it hurt their hands?

A fact I found about life in the castle is the castle life wasn't that great compared to the movie descriptions.

A question I have about the life is why were there different key people of the castle staff?

One thing I found about medieval tools is there are many different tools used to build stuff.

A question I have about the tools is why were most tools made of iron and wood?

Why were baths usually taken in wooden baths?

ENTERTAINMENT

There were musicians playing instruments, minstrels singing, jestrels telling jokes and making faces.

Why was storytelling so popular?

CHAPELS

Chapels were an important part of life in a castle.

Building a Castle

Building a castle was no easy task it tokk 200 men cost a lot of many and use alot of materials to build one castle.

About castles

Castles were brought into England by the France and were made up of many parts.

Why did they pay men to make it when they could have had slaves to make the castles for them?

How ddi they make some many castles when it took 2000 men and 10 months to make some times?
